A new open-access paper from R3GROUP researchers at the University of Patras and Politecnico di Torino has been published in the International Journal of Experimental Design and Process Optimisation: “Process window development of DED-LB/M process with coaxial wire for stainless steel AISI 316L”, authored by Panagiotis Stavropoulos, Harry Bikas, Konstantinos Tzimanis, Nikos Porevopoulos, Adriano Nicola Pilagatti, Eleonora Atzeni, Luca Iuliano and Alessandro Salmi.

Laser-based Directed Energy Deposition with coaxial wire (DED-LB/M) is an additive manufacturing process with strong potential for industrial applications — but realising that potential requires a precise understanding of how process parameters affect the quality of the deposited material. This paper addresses exactly that, focusing on stainless steel AISI 316L.

The study combines two complementary experimental approaches: a one-factor-at-a-time evaluation to qualitatively analyse track dimensions and define the process window, and a full factorial design to derive response surfaces. By examining bead width, height and depth, the work identifies the optimal process parameters and generates structured process knowledge that can directly inform future experimental work and process control strategies.

The paper is published open access in Vol. 7, No. 3, 2024.
